I had used an image of a roman statue for a mixed media piece and so I had a few copies of it sitting on my work table. I also had an old book sitting there that I had torn apart for another project. My ink pens were also strewn around the table. The result of these random elements being there was that I sat down and very roughly sketched the statue on a page of text from the disassembled book. Then I cut it down to ATC size. Sometimes, that is the way it happens. I feel in the mood to do something creative, but I don’t want to wait to clean up from my last project. So, I just look around at what is already there and find some way to use it. Nothing special, but it is good to loosen up my hand and use it every day.
It is too bad there aren’t any life drawing classes around where I live that are open to artists in general. It would really be nice to be able to draw the human form from life again like I did in my college days.

Love. This.
I am almost always drawn to text integrated into visual art, somehow.
If I could start my skin over again, my tattoos would mostly be text.

Thanks Mack. I like text too, but only when used in certain ways. Generally, I prefer to see text used as an abstract visual element rather than seeing it used to define the theme of the piece for the viewer. It isn’t that I haven’t seen it done well or enjoyed it when it has been used to direct the viewer’s thoughts, but I think I’ve seen way too many pieces that say things like “create” or “imagine” or “beauty.”
So, what would your text tattoos read? Enquiring minds and all that…

Ugh, I cannot abide those “create” “dream” etc pieces. Entirely too inspirational-poster like.
I would have lovers write on my skin, a word, a phrase and one not necessarily written at the hopeful beginning, or the comfortable middle, but perhaps at the end – full of awareness.
I was going to say a warning disclaimer, too, but I think the words of my lovers would serve the same way.
My son’s birthday, favorite lines of beloved books, entire poems, including one that a lover wrote just for me.
I would wear them all in plain black ink.

This sounds pretty intriguing. What an interesting (and scary) concept about having your exes leave parting words affixed to your body. I would not be that courageous.
What are some of your favorite lines from beloved books?

Re: I know that statue
Hey, great eye Kosse! He is flipped horizontally to boot, so I am very impressed that you recognize him. The masterful piece is the statue, my effort is merely a rough sketch of a real work of art. There is so much beauty in those antique statues. They just slay me.
